James Albert Howard Bates, 87, died peacefully in his home on Tuesday, June 5, 2018.
Jim is survived by his children, Bernie Bates, Joyce Bates, and Preston & Andrea Bates, his grandchildren, Adam & Catherine Bates, Samuel Bates, and Eric & Ashley Snead, great grandchildren, his brothers Joe, Bob, & Jesse Bates, his sister Sue Kaczmar, and extended family. Jim’s wife Hanna passed away on March 14, 2012.
Jim was on active duty in the U.S. Army for 22 years, serving two tours in the Vietnam War and one in the Korean War. He received an honorable discharge as a Sergeant First Class at the age of 40. He continued to work in the Civil Service as a carpenter at Ft. Campbell, KY.
Besides spending time with his family, Jim enjoyed the outdoors. He loved rabbit hunting, fishing, and camping. Jim was a simple man with a generous heart. He truly exemplified the phrase “it is better to give than to receive.”
Visitation will be from 12 PM-2 PM at Neal-Tarpley-Parchman Funeral Home on Sunday, June 10. Funeral services for Jim will follow at 2 PM in the chapel. Jim will be buried next to his wife at Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Clarksville TN immediately following the chapel service.
